Dohei’s works full of Grace and Vitality
Hello, everyone!
We’ve been selling ceramic ware in Kagurazaka, Tokyo since 1985.This website features a special section on Tsuboshima Dohei, one of the most outstanding ceramic artists who left behind many excellent works.
His master was Kawakita Handeishi, known as “Koetsu in Showa era” or “Rosanjin in the east and Handeishi in the west.” Although he was a businessman, he lived the second half of his life making ceramics as much as he wanted. In 1946, his home in Chitoseyama was confiscated by GHQ, and he relocated his kiln to Mt. Hase in Tsu City, Mie Prefecture, opening up a new kiln. This is the origin of the“ Hironaga Kiln”.
Tsuboshima Dohei first met Handeishi by chance in the same year while staying in Hironaga, a suburb of Tsu City where his mother had been evacuated. He began helping to relocate the kiln and knead pottery clay. Dohei was 17 and Handeishi 68 at that time. Dohei was apprenticed to Handeishi and had been producing tens of thousands of works at Hironaga Kiln (now Handeishi Senkaku Kiln) for the next 67 years until he passed away at the age of 84.
Inheriting Handeishi’s cultivated pottery-making spirit and the unique techniques of Hironaga Kiln, he created his world of ceramic art. While Handeishi dedicated himself to Chato (pottery for the tea ceremony), Dohei expanded the scope of his pottery making to tableware and large inlaid works (vases, lanterns, etc.), which continued to attract many people.
His Charm is endless with his rhythmic use of the potter’s wheel, fresh and charming paintings, and powerful sculptures. We want people around the world to know many works he left behind!Through this website and Instagram, we’ll send various works of Tsuboshima Dohei from now on.
For inquiries about the works, please contact us by E-mail or DM (Instagram).
